Frequency Jumping?

Post by CoreTemp-User154 »

Hi all.

I'm new to the overclocking and Core Temp. I just started using it to monitor my CPU after I did minimal overclocking.

I have an E8400 and just changed the FSB to 400 so it runs at 3.6 (versus 3.0).

As I was monitoring with Core Temp, I see that the frequency keeps jumping. I am not sure if this is normal.

It keeps showing ...

2399.91MHz (399.99 x 6.0) then changing to 3.599.87MHz (399.99 x 9.0), back and forth over and over again.

Help?

Thanks

This is a feature of Intel CPUs. When there is no need for power, the multiplier goes down, and when there is need for cpu power the multiplier goes where you have set it to go.
You can of course disable this feature, but I personally haven't disabled it.

(I still try to remember its name:P)

Thanks XhmikosR.

That definitely helps. I did some Googling, I didn't get a 100% answer, but I think it's called Speed Stepping.

It's called speedstep or EIST.
As XhmikosR said, it's a power saving feature. You can also disable it in the BIOS, but if your overclock is stable, I'd leave it on.

A new version with fixed frequency reporting is here:

Please read the description before using it.
Unrelated to the "jumping".
